About the Greenjackets

The Maldon Greenjackets Morrismen were formed in 1988 as successors to The Maldon Morris Men. We perform dances mainly from the Cotswold tradition. These are characterised by the use of staves or handkerchiefs, which in Morris have always been associated with Spring, Summer, fertility and growth.

We have recently undergone a renaissance and become a mixed side, changing our name as a result to Maldon Greenjackets Morris.

Activities

During the summer months of May to August we dance in public, mostly on Tuesdays. A regular venue is Maldon's quay - sometimes called the Hythe. See the events diary

During the winter months we practise most Tuesday evenings in the United reform Church Hall at the top of Market hill. Turn up at 8pm and you'll have done two dances by nine!

We've collected for various charities over the years including Children in Need, RNLI, McMillan Nurses and many others.

We've danced at locations across England including Rochester, Buxton, Lancaster; and abroad in France and Holland.

We run our own ‘Ales' (Aptly named gathering of Morris sides), Ceilidhs and Days of Dance in Essex and Suffolk.

The Maldon Greenjackets Morris welcomes men and women of all ages. Come and join us in learning living traditions that were born over 500 years ago. We dance in the Cotswold style with either Handkerchiefs or Staves. Musicians are also welcome. It's fairly energetic and good fun trying to learn the patterns and fit in the twiddly bits.
